From the Opinion Page of The Olympia: Change law that allows evictions of houseboat dwellers

QUOTE:

BOO: EVICTING RESIDENTS
A small number of people have been living on houseboats in West Bay Marina and Martin Marina for more than a decade. But now they face eviction because of the language in state law that permits people to live only on boats. It’s a bureaucratic splitting of hairs. Permitting people to live on boats, but not houseboats, doesn’t make practical sense. The state Department of Natural Resources should delay the evictions until it either rewrites the law forbidding all live-aboards or includes living in houseboats as a permitted use.

  1. Hello, my name is Conner Edwards and I work for the Freedom Foundation. We are interested in the plight of the Olympia Live-Aboard Association's situation and might have found a way to help. There is an obscure process for changing the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). Since it is not the RCW which explicitly bans houseboats, but WAC 332-30-106, it would be possible to change the law without going through a vote in the Washington State Legislature. I also recently got back records responsive to my request (all internal e-mails and documents related to the houseboat eviction) from DNR, which I could share if you are interested. Please e-mail me at CEdwards@myfreedomfoundation.org or call me at (360) 956-3482 if you are still interested in trying to fight this.
